While new construction generally begins with plans created around known dimensions and design requirements, additions and major renovations must account for a structure that already exists, including its foundation, framing, roof, utilities, elevations and previous modifications.

Those existing conditions can influence the size, shape, placement and construction methods used for a residential addition. Accurate measurements, structural evaluation and coordination between old and new building components become important parts of developing construction plans.
